Vessel sinks following collision off Japan

The Japan-flagged cement carrier Sumise Maru No. 38 (IMO: 9054200) that collided with Japan-flagged chemical tanker Kaisei Maru (IMO: 9560431) off Himeji, Japan, on Wednesday sank three hours after the incident. The collision took place at 08:15 local time, and three hours later Sumise Maru No. 38 sank in the Harima-Nada Sea 7.5 miles southwest of Himeji, according to IHS Sea-web. Both vessels had one crew member injured. Sumise Maru No. 38 was sailing empty from Osaka to Ako, while Kaisei Maru was carrying 1,000 tonnes of methanol from Osaki-Kamijima to Himeji. No pollution was reported, and Kaisei Maru continued voyage and proceeded to a dock in Himeji for inspection and repairs.
