As the propeller turns it absorbs the torque developed by the engine at given revolutions i.e., the delivered horsepower – and converts that to the thrust which, in turn, pushes the vessel through the water. According to Bernoulli’s law the passage of a hydrofoil (propeller blade section) through the water causes a positive pressure on the face of the blade and a negative pressure on its back. It is the resolution of the pressures that results in the torque requirement and the thrust development of the propeller. One of the most integral parts of the ship is its bottom structure. It is designed not only to give hull the required strength to withstand the weight of the cargo, but also to withstand the external hydrostatic loads that act on the bottom of the hull.

A ship’s hull is basically made up of bent plates welded together. If these plates are not stiffened, the bending moments on the plates due to the loads may exceed the value of stress that can be withstood by the material, and hence cause failure. So, the plates are stiffened (or their section modulus is increased) by adding stiffeners to them.

En estos días asistimos con un descorazonador silencio e indiferencia al desmantelamiento de las viejas instalaciones del Dique Seco de Gijón.

En Gijón los cierres de empresas, los desmantelamientos de sus instalaciones y la voracidad del sector inmobiliario para ocupar antiguos espacios industriales, sin guardar memoria de sus usos anteriores, han venido siendo algo tan frecuente que han dejado de ser noticia. Sin embargo, no deja de ser triste comprobar que una actividad industrial de larga vida en nuestra ciudad se extingue, y con ella todo vestigio de su existencia.

Con frecuencia nos olvidamos de los orígenes de muchas de nuestras industrias y relegamos al olvido un pasado que merece ser recordado. Por ello es imprescindible

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Exploring the Future of Marine Vessels with ROBOSHIP

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, is participating in an inter-business project to explore the potential of the "ROBOSHIP" as the marine vessel of the future. A proof of concept (PoC) test using two actual surface vessels was jointly conducted on November 11, 2020. This PoC test, to be held in the sea off Toyosu in Tokyo using a passenger vessel owned by Tokyo Cruise Ship Co., Ltd., intended to demonstrate the cutting-edge technologies and ideas of the participating companies, with the aim of supporting the development and widespread adoption of a navigational support system for coastal vessels.

The PoC testing is part of the "ROBOSHIP Joint Value Creation Project"
