Making headlines at this year’s Marintec China exhibition in Shanghai is a design for a giant nuclear-powered megamax containership.
State-run Jiangnan Shipyard has unveiled a design for a 24,000 teu ship incorporating molten salt reactor technology.
“The ultra-large nuclear container ship is designed to truly achieve zero emissions during the ship’s operating cycle,” the yard’s parent, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), noted in a social media post.
A recent survey carried by the International Chamber of Shipping showed 9% of its C-suite members expect nuclear ships within a decade.
Marintec China, Asia’s largest shipping exhibition, is back occupying eight halls at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre after a four-year, covid-induced hiatus. The exhibition space was used as an emergency quarantine centre with more than 15,000 beds at the height of the covid crisis in Shanghai.
