Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) has announced a recent contract to supply complete electric systems for two new icebreakers.

The ships are being built at Havyard Shipyard in Leirvik, to DNV ice class Icebreaker Ice 10 and Winterized Cold (-30o C) which means that the ship can break ice over 1m thick and is equipped with an icing avoidance system. The order value is said to be NOK 35million.

The scope of supply is for a 450V 60Hz system comprising:

  • two shaft generators NEGR 630LA6, 3,000kVA at 1,200rpm;
  • two aux generators NEG 355 MB4,750kVA at 1,800rpm;
  • four side thruster motors NEMJ 450LB6, 1,000kW at 1,200rpm;
  • four side thruster starters SD/2000;
  • five switchboards, including main, de-icing and emergency boards.

The contract includes, in addition, all electrical calculations, engineering, commissioning and sea trials.

NES says it is currently supplying another icebreaker propulsion system, for a FEMCO vessel, which is scheduled to be ready for handover in late 2015.

NES, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2014, says that 30 vessels have been commissioned worldwide with NES equipment, while the cojpany has been expanding its portfolio with products such as QUEST (Quadro Energy Storage Technology). It expects to introduce a number of new systems during 2015.
